If variety is the spice of life, Volkswagen’s SUV range is reaching vindaloo levels of hotness. You see, there’s an SUV for just about every niche, ranging from small to large, and from petrol and diesel to plug-in hybrid and electric. And now, tipping the scale over into phaal levels of heat, is the new Volkswagen ID.5.
The ID.5 is as on-trend as it’s possible to be right now. It’s an SUV, it has the swooping roofline of a coupé, and it’s fully electric. It’s based on the more conventional ID.4, but its more rakish looks mark it out as the ‘sporty’ member of the family.
Like the ID.4, there’s just one battery option available in the ID.5, with a 77kWh usable capacity, which can take you up to 323 miles between charges. That’s farther than any version of the rival Audi E-tron Sportback can manage, as well as the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model Y.
The entry-level model is powered by a single 172bhp electric motor that can propel the ID.5 from 0-62mph in 10.4sec. Opt for the Pro Performance version and power is boosted to 201bhp, which drops the 0-62mph time to 8.4sec.
