CLEVELAND — Sensata Technologies discussed its business outlook and progress in the wake of its acquisitions of Xirgo Technologies and PRECO Electronics during a Sept. 12 press event during American Trucking Associations’ 2021 Technology & Maintenance Council Fall Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition.
Sensata is a provider of sensor technology.
Xirgo Technologies, a telematics and data insight provider based in Camarillo, Calif., was acquired by Sensata in April. PRECO Electronics, a vehicle safety technology company out of Boise, Idaho, was purchased in August.
David Hofacker, Sensata senior manager of OEM business development and Mike Lavery, senior director of sales, emphasized the use of radar and telematics since the acquisitions, and said the company looks forward to applying the principles of autonomy and sensor perception with its product line.
One of its products, the PreView Sentry, is an active blind spot monitoring system that focuses on short-range forward and reverse blind zone detection. Lavery noted the main goal of the PreView line is collision mitigation.
“The idea is to monitor the surroundings and provide insight,” he said. “Our end-customer is the driver, and they are the ones using the data.”
Lavery said Sensata has helped fleet customers improve safety by addressing three major problem blind-spot scenarios for drivers: takeoff, changing lanes and turning corners.
“Our main goal is to protect people,” he said. “We have been able to do this by monitoring these incidents and providing real-time information so drivers can react. They can consciously know what they are doing and prevent it.”

Hofacker also said that Xirgo provides Sensata with technology to run an ecosystem that offers onboard vehicle integration and cloud APIs, providing a single view from disparate data sources via Internet of Things, data insight and cloud-based platforms.
With the Xirgo acquisition, Sensata added approximately 160 sales, engineering and manufacturing employees in the United States and Lithuania, including more than 75 engineers.
Sensata also said that PRECO’s future plans include the expansion of its core market, as well as targeting new sectors that complement PRECO’s existing products for heavy-duty OEMs and end-users, fleet operators, and foreign and domestic authorities.
