Winner: P Flannery Plant Hire, MachineMax Telematics
Flannery worked with telematics specialist MachineMax to co-develop a digital system that provides customers with a consolidated view of equipment data.
Information from onboard telematics can be used to improve utilisation of plant and equipment on site, potentially reducing wasted time, money and resources.
“Understanding exactly how a fleet is being used is the first step to greener construction,” the company added in its entry.
“This winning innovation brings not only economic benefits but also sustainability improvements, with the impact on operations made visible through the use of this software”
Judges’ comment
The challenges to rolling out telematics centre on the wide variety of equipment types and data sources, as well as the difficulty of making the right business decisions based on the data. As a result, Flannery focused on analysis tools that flag up the operational changes likely to have the biggest impact, by reducing the emissions from engine idling, for example.
Customers can access the data via a portal or through programming links to third-party project planning tools.
The CN Specialists Awards judges said Flannery’s innovation demonstrated “clear benefits in maximising efficiency for operation, servicing and fuel usage, in real time”.
The judges added: “This winning innovation brings not only economic benefits but also sustainability improvements, with the impact on operations made visible through the use of this software.”
Highly commended: Advanté, EcoLogic Solar
Advanté has sought to cut the carbon footprint of welfare cabins by developing units that meet the bulk of their power needs through solar generation. The EcoLogic Solar welfare units it now produces feature a hybrid power system, with a large solar array backed up by a low-carbon, low-noise LPG generator. The package also includes telematics to monitor energy performance.
The CN Specialists Awards judges said Advanté had brought “everyday site cabins up to modern standards, with environmental benefits clearly evident”. They applauded the company’s initiative in helping construction achieve net-zero carbon targets.
