It has been a while since the largest automobile manufacturer in India has launched a new vehicle. Their last new vehicle was the S-Presso, a micro-SUV that was launched back in 2019. The Celerio is expected to be based on the Heartect platform. Due to this, the dimensions of the hatchback will increase which means there will be more space for the occupants. Also, the new platform should provide better safety.

Exterior

Maruti Suzuki has redesigned the whole exterior of the Celerio. It no longer gets a tall boy design. The exterior is now rounded and the same goes for the headlamp and tail lamps. There are some elements taken from the Baleno and the Swift.

There is a new grille with a chrome slat and it also comes with fog lamps. The turn indicators are placed on outside rearview mirrors and it is not known whether Maruti Suzuki is using alloy wheels or stylized wheel covers. The manufacturer is still using a door handle for the tailgate. All of this equipment will not be offered on the lower-end variants.

There will be changes to the cabin of the Celerio as well. However, there will be a lot of parts sharing from other Maruti Suzuki vehicles. It will come with a three-spoke steering wheel, analogue instrument cluster with a digital readout, all power windows, manual air conditioning, circular air conditioning vents on the sides and rectangular AC vents in the centre and a 12V charging socket. It will also come with a 7-inch SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system that we have seen on other Maruti Suzuki vehicles. The infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Engine and gearbox

Earlier media reports suggested that the Celerio will be offered with two engine options. There will be a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder unit and a 1.2-litre four-cylinder unit. Both are naturally aspirated petrol engines. However, according to Autocar India, a new generation Celerio will be offered only with a new K10C DualJet engine. Gearbox options will include a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed AMT.

This new engine would make the 2021 Celerio, the most fuel-efficient hatchback in its segment. The engine is expected to deliver somewhere around 26 kmpl. The K10C DualJet engine will come with two fuel injectors per cylinder. Usually, there is only one injector per cylinder. Having more injectors means more precise control over fueling and it also helps in making the engine run cooler.

Because of the DualJet technology, the power figures would also get a slight bump. The current K10C engine produces 67 hp of max power and 93 Nm of peak torque. This was the same engine that was used on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS but with a turbocharger on it. Because of the turbocharger, the engine produced 108 hp of max power and 170 Nm of peak torque.
