Mercedes-Benz will be the first manufacturer to integrate a way to pay for goods and services directly in their car’s infotainment system, with the help of Visa.
In-Car purchases are becoming increasingly common with automakers making some optional extras subscription based, but owners have to log on to an account with their phone or computer to actually complete the purchase.
Mercedes-Benz wants to change that by incorporating technologies form Visa that will transform the car into a payment’s device.
Owners will be able to pay for food, parking, fuel or a number of other purchases directly through their vehicle’s infotainment screen.
Transactions will be secured by the use of a fingerprint scanner inside the car and Visa’s “Cloud Token Framework”, which protects the user’s data by removing critical information and storing it securely in the cloud.
The system will be able to connect with multiple occupant’s phones in order to use the bank account linked to any person in the car.
This system will work with the vehicle-to-infrastructure communications network in order to allow remote payment of services.
This feature will roll out as an update to some Mercedes owners in Ireland and the United Kingdom in the spring of 2022 and it should expand to other European markets later on.
No information considering a possible introduction of this system to North America has been revealed yet.
