New Driverless Car Safety Oversight Sought as Congress Stalls


The federal agency in charge of keeping U.S. roads safe isn’t doing enough to regulate and accelerate deployment of autonomous vehicles, according to lawmakers and auto groups.

There is a growing push for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to move forward with AV regulation on its own since lawmakers have declined to tackle the issue this year.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) called it “disappointing” that the Senate-passed bipartisan infrastructure bill (H.R. 3684), now pending in the House, doesn’t include a national framework for autonomous vehicles. She said legislation on AVs should move forward in Congress but …
